iPhone Accessory Review: Auzentech i.Fuzen HP-1

There are many iPhone cases on the market today. Most of them just protect your phone from falls and scratches. But then there are those which pack something extra into a package which you already carry with yourself all the time. Today I have one such example and its Auzentech i.Fuzen HP-1 case with dual audio, amp and battery for iPhone.
The case is made from a very sturdy plastic. So far it comes just in one colour: black. It is styled in the manner of iPhone, so it blends in quite nicely not making the case stand out as an awkward contraption.
It shields iPhone all around except for its front. In the back side of the case there are cut-outs for camera and flash, and sides have cut-outs for volume buttons, as well as on/off button and headphone jack cut-outs on top.
Still despite all that protection, I would be quite concerned accidentally dropping it, not as much in fear of damaging iPhone but rather damaging the case itself.
The case adds less than one centimeter to IPhones thickness and a few centimeters to its length. I found that the added weight is minimal as well.
The case features redirection slots from iPhones mic/speaker so you don’t miss your alarm or important calls. And for those moments when you play a game or listen to a video without your headphones, those slots make volume louder, since they are facing you.
One thing I found hard to get used to is the bottom headphone jack position. What balances it out is that there are 2 headphone jacks! So it’s not only you who can enjoy the music but your friend as well.
Another great feature of HP-1 case is the battery. It is a 1650mAh rechargeable lithium polymer battery.
According to Auzentech, you get additional 44 hours of audio playback, 11 hours of video playback or 8 hours of talk time. It basically doubles the life of your iPhone. And indeed I only charged my iPhone once during the week, while usually I have to charge it twice, if not more.
To charge the battery, just connect the case to the provided mini USB cable (or your own). There is also a beautiful 4 step battery life indicator, and it makes a nice spinning impression when you charge it. Quite a nice touch I must say!
The bonus to mini USB slot, is that if you travel you can only take your mini USB cable, and that allows you to sync your iPhone with iTunes, without the need for proprietary cable thus eliminating multiple cables.
Now the main and most important feature of this case is an amp. It features J-FET OP-AMP to provide Vacuum Tube like sound output with 180mW output power. To enjoy that power all you have to do is press a button on the side of the case. You also get a touch-panel on the front to control volume, which is quite nice.
The amp provides higher volume, as well as a broader range for music. Everything feels much richer: be it classical instruments, Drum and Bass or Vocals. The end result is a much richer experience then what you would get with the stock iPhone. But of course you need proper headphones to experience that, and my AKG K142 HD headphones were perfect for that. I am afraid, regular Apple ear buds just won’t cut it.
According to Auzuntech, there is going to be a firmware update: Once the iPhone is fully charged through the i.Fuzen HP-1 and showing 100% charged, the i.Fuzen HP-1 would turn off automatically so that to save extra battery life to the i.Fuzen HP-1. It will be available in April, once the product is launched.
While $129.99 is a steep price to pay for a case, it’s definitely worth it if you enjoy listening to good quality music. And doubled battery life makes it a worthy purchase!
